eDozer
An installation to experience being an E-waste producer

Research
E-waste
Electronic waste or e-waste describes discarded electrical or electronic devices. Used electronics destined for reuse, resale, salvage, recycling or disposal are also considered e-waste.
Cause by
- Lack of awareness about how good they have and not enough knowledge about where the rubbish dumped
- Fashion (trend) people chase trending things, e.g. new iPhone published every year
- Make the product not durable > people quickly buy a new one > earn money
- Large and transactional companies foster buying a new gadget is cool (advertisement) and push the new technology frequency
- She cares less about waste disposal or even ignores it because it is less important compared to how to gain GDP
- Want to provide the best for citizens but don't want to pollute herself
Negative Effects
- Adverse human health effects and environmental pollution
- Backward countries become global garbage dumps, and 24 hours are burning toxic electronic products
- Hong Kong has also become a global garbage dump

Workshop
PD workshop 1
To test our initial idea with a paper prototype, let the participants can also brainstorm a new idea or improve it. We hope to get more insight from the user perspective by co-creating the prototype.

- Purpose of the workshop
- Our identity

- Card Game (pair up the cards)
- Pick cards (origin of e-waste)
- Circle the phone (used phones)
- Watch an E-waste video

- Introduce our prototype
- Play the prototype
- Ask for feedback and ideas

- Focus on attractiveness: Like the arcade game, Brilliant outlook
- Although it is impressive, the player may not be willing to try if it makes them dirty
- Change to drop down the e-waste to developing countries
- It is meaningless if there is no phone given to the player for the touchpoint to attract people
- Suggest to add the souvenir to attract people
- Adding second floor for explaining the drop-down e-waste to developing countries and giving the souvenir
- Add Sound effects to make it impressive and attractive
PD workshop 2
After revising the prototype by getting the idea from PD workshop 1, we want to test the new idea and see any other space to improve it further. This workshop also takes the co-created method to work with the participants

- Purpose of the workshop
- Our identity

- Blind Typing (describe the e-waste pictures)
- Guess and Draw (keywords about e-waste)
- Old Phone in Mind (draw memories)
- Watch an E-waste video

- Introduce our prototype
- Play the prototype
- Ask for feedback and ideas

- Combined two screens into one screen on the first floor
- Adding different sound effects or background music to give impressive to player
- A 3D model of African children to represent the developing countries or affected countries
- A video to provide information on the E-waste
- Press the button to promise no being an E-waste producer
- Using the “NEED” and “Want” concept for advising
- Using light (e.g. LED / button light) to guide players on which part of the machine they are going to focus
- The developing country part and souvenir part can place at the bottom and middle.

Vision Statement
eDozer wants to make people aware of the situation of E-waste and encourage them to reduce E-waste.
When playing the eDozer, tourists can experience being an e-waste producer when they are going to purchase a new phone. Also, they act as an inflicter to damage the undeveloped countries. We hope our design can enhance their awareness of reducing e-waste so as to keep the earth healthy.
Design Concept
Coins Converter
When insert the phone to this machine, it will generate some coins to player for playing the eDozer.
When people change a new phone, it will produce the e-waste which including different materials.

E-waste Coins
The coins is for playing the eDozer. It made by e-waste and also represents to different material.
When people change a new phone or throw a phone, it will produce the e-waste which including different materials, e.g. mercury, palladium, metal, glass, plastic.

eDozer
This is an E-waste coins pusher. When people see this machine in front of the electricity shop, they will play it before entering the shop. It will bring the message to the player before they change to a new phone.
When they input the coins to win the award or want to change a new phone, they are also producing E-waste.
The more new models of phones they purchase every year, the more e-waste they create.

eDozer (1st floor)
- It is a part of the coins pusher.
- A screen with video and funny background music to attract people's interest and makes it more attractive
- Default presenting a happy atmosphere
- When inputting the coins, it will play an upset sound
- When the player plays for 1 min, it will suddenly turn off
- It represents the developed countries which enjoy their living style and don't know they will impact on the developing countries
- The developed countries pass the E-waste to the 2nd floor and damage the undeveloped countries

eDozer (2nd floor)
- After 1min, it will light up, and the real E-waste will drop down
- A big sound will produce will the E-waste drops which attract people's attention
- The model of African children being overwhelmed by E-waste
- It represents the developing countries will get damaged by the first floor (developing countries)
- The undeveloped countries is the main role to process E-waste.

eDozer (“I Do” Button)
- A animation about the detail of the E-waste and how serious
- It also encourages them to take action to reduce E-waste by pressing the button
- When player press the button they are promise not being a e-waste producer and they can get a souvenir

Souvenir
- The phone dust paste souvenir and a little card with HK characteristic and E-waste
- Remind their promise by the stick at the back of the phone
- When people use it to clean up the screen, it also reminds them the phone can be used for longer time

Flows
- Get coins from coins converter
- Insert coins (upset background sound)
- First floor turn down
- Second floor light up
- E-waste drop down
- African children being overwhelmed by E-waste
- Play animation at 1 st Floor
- Press “I Do” button
- Get souvenir
- Stick the dust paste at the back of the phone

Prototyping

Feedback
Professors' Comments
- They think the metaphor is good
- Good to not directly translate the message
- Let them experience more than teach them
- The outlook is beautiful
- The topic is close to everyone
- Amazing to build up this prototype
- Good to have coins converter
- Add some instruction to explain the idea/guide
- Participant may think can get a new phone from eDozer
- The animation is too long
Showcase

My role
- Take part in all the research and design stages with my teammates
- Less focus on the Arduino part but more contributing to the execution, mechanics, and carpentry
Reflections
Participatory design
In this project, we invited non-local people to join our PD workshop. Through the PD workshop, we find that non-local students are different from the local student. They may think the appearance's attractiveness is more important than the topic-related appearance. Therefore, it is necessary to have a PD workshop to find out the user's experience and create with them. It helps us to improve our design.
Installation experience
It is a good chance for us to think in detail about providing a smooth installation experience to the user. As our target is tourists, we should choose a place they will visit or match our topic and how they will interact with the installation. Or even how to increase the chance that people are willing to interact with the installation.
Carpentry
I am responsible for thinking about the machine's structure and trying to fix out the mechanic problem. For example, the coins converter uses the mechanic to push the coins out without using the Arduino. Also, I was responsible for building the machine up by using wood. It is my first time using different tools to build up such a large thing. I went to the metal and wood workshop for several times and learned how to use these tools. I really enjoy learning new things.
